Using the University Archives and Primary Sources: Class Visits to
the OU Archives

Interested in Having Your Class Visit our Archives and Special Collections?

The Oglethorpe Librarians are here to offer instruction classes centered around our Archives and Special Collections. We can, of course, tailor a class around your course or assignment, but here are some options that might work for you!

All sessions can begin with a brief description of what archives are, the process items go through to become part of an archival collection, basic preservation and storage, ethics of archives, how to use primary sources, and how to read a finding aid.

History of Print Advertising
Utilizing our vast print periodical collection, OU Librarians can provide your class with a lesson the history of print advertising from the mid-1800s to present.

Use of Primary Sources in Research
Through a tutorial on primary sources and hands-on learning, OU Librarians can tailor a class to your topic, whether it be English, History, Art, etc., providing artifacts from the collection that can be used as a basis for research assignments or as sources to supplement a topic.

History of the Book
With items from our diverse Special Collections, OU Librarians can show your class examples of printing and book-making from the 18th century to present offering examples of different printing types, font styles, etc.

Illuminated Manuscripts
Using the Library's facsimile of the Celtic Book of Kells, OU Librarians can offer a presentation on the history of illuminated manuscripts from the Egyptians to Medieval monks.
