Annotated Bibliography Assignment

Annotated Bibliography Assignment
Narratives of the Self I

Your professor will either allow the Oglethorpe Reference Librarians to visit your class for a workshop on research or require you to attend an out of class workshop. After your workshop, your assignment is to prepare an annotated bibliography. The topic for your assignment is:

Sophocles and his role in Ancient Greek drama

Your annotated bibliography must include the following.
• There must be at least four source types represented:

  • A book or ebook
  • Article from a scholarly journal
  • A website
  • One other source type of your choice (cannot be one listed above)

• For each source, you will:

  • List the type of source (a book, website, a scholarly article, a magazine article, etc.).
  • Give the proper citation for each source in MLA format—unless another format is required by your professor.
  • Describe the process by which the source was located. For example, did you use GALILEO, the Library’s online catalog, Google Scholar, Google, etc. to find your sources? What criteria, search phrases, keywords, filters, advanced search options, etc. did you use? Be specific.
  • Rank how reliable you believe each source is on the following scale:

1 = probably unreliable
2 = probably somewhat unreliable
3 = probably fairly reliable
4 = probably very reliable

Explain in one or two sentences why you ranked the source the way you did. Be specific.

  • In order to find the four sources you must use GALILEO to find at least one of them and you must use the Library’s online catalog or our ebook databases to find another. The other two sources can be found by any digital means, such as simply using Google or Google Scholar.

Here’s an example

Scholarly Article:

Honig, Bonnie. "Antigone’s Two Laws: Greek Tragedy and the Politics of Humanism." New Literary History, vol. 41, no. 1, 2010, pp. 1-33, Accessed 20 Jun. 2017.

I searched GALILEO for Sophocles Greek drama, but I didn’t get many sources on Sophocles specifically. So then I went into Advanced Search and left Greek drama in the main search box but put Sophocles in its own search box and selected Abstract in the drop down box. I still had to read through about three pages of results before I came upon an article that was applicable to my topic. I would rank this article a 4 because it’s published in a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal. Also, I googled the author Bonnie Honig and found out that she is an authority on my topic. Currently, she is a professor at Brown University and has written many books and articles. Finally, she has a PhD from Johns Hopkins University and a MSc from the London School of Economics.

Due date for this assignment

  • Your annotated bibliography must be uploaded to Moodle by DATE. (Your instructor will decide)
